Your RV feels more like home when you’re traveling with your pets. Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, or a different pet, it is important for them to feel at home in your travels as well. Here are some tips to make sure you and your pet(s) are ready to hit the open road:
Bring the essentials – When you are traveling long distance with your pet and won’t be home for a while, you need to have a checklist of your pet’s essentials. Like you, they have necessities when traveling so it is important to remember them when you’re packing. While some pets have extra needs, here are the most common items your pet may need:
- Collar
- Harness/Leash
- Food/Snacks/Water
- Food/Water Bowls
- Litter Box
- Waste Bags/Litter
- Toys
- Brush
- Crate
- Medicine
- Shampoo
Visit the vet – There are many important reasons to take your pet to the vet before traveling or camping. First and foremost is to ensure your pet is updated on their shots. Your pet could encounter sick or diseased creatures during your trip so it is important to make sure they are protected. The next reason is to get your pet micro-chipped (if they aren’t already). In case your pet gets loose on your trip, you can contact your vet and find out where they are. Finally, while you are there, it may be a good idea to pick up worm medicine. Your pet could potentially pick up worms especially when you’re in an unfamiliar place, so it is essential to your pet’s health to de-worm them.
Make sure they have tags – In case your pet gets loose, it is also important to make sure they have updated tags to hang from their collars. You can purchase these at the photo lab section of Walmart or your area pet store. Be sure to include your pet’s name, your name, and contact information on it.
Make time for exercise – Being cooped up in a motor home on long trips can make our bodies sore, and the same goes for your pets. Be sure to make your pet’s exercise needs a necessity. Make time to stop and walk them a couple times a day and play with them throughout; after all, they are on vacation too. While they are outside, make sure they also have time to go to the bathroom.
Traveling with your favorite four-legged (or 2 winged) friend can be a great experience; being prepared to do so makes it even better.
